Miller’s essay on networking and phatic culture got me thinking about
two points which I feel were key in his essay.
1. Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter have turned many
individuals into somewhat of narcissists with the constant need for attention,
whether that’s through the form of “likes”, comments, shares, etc.
2. Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter don’t really lend
themselves to quality interaction but rather serve as a tool to keep in touch
with little to no substance in the communication.
In regards to my first point, here is a news short of a study done in
which the results show that there is a correlation between how many friends you
have on Facebook and the narcissistic traits you may possess.
In regards to my second point, this is a short video done by a group of
university students which further shows how meaningless and banal some of the
interactions on websites such as Facebook can be when you place them in a “real-life”
setting.
